When Mandela Visited Seattle: An Evening to Remember and Reflect

This event is no longer on sale.

Tuesday July 15

6:00 PM  –  8:30 PM

Attracted by Seattle’s reputation as a growing hub of new knowledge and philanthropy, Nelson Mandela and his wife Graca Machel accepted an invitation for a three-day visit to raise funds for their charitable foundations, forge connections with the city's philanthropists and educators, and spend time with students and community groups in December 1999. Mandela’s visit was a welcome tonic for a city unsure of itself after the mayhem of the WTO protests. The famed freedom fighter lifted Seattle’s spirit, keeping his audiences of students, dignitaries, anti-apartheid activists, health-care experts, and philanthropists pointed toward the horizon with a compelling, yet simple message: the future beckons.

Join us at MOHAI for a special evening to reflect on Mandela’s visit, his impact on our community, and how his message still resonates today. Learn from the Mandela welcome committee organizers, anti-apartheid activists, and former students as they reflect on this once-in-a-lifetime event that captivated Seattle at the turn of the century.

Registration is free but limited. Please register by July 14 to attend.
